As I mentioned on the About This Site page, my interest in genealogy was first sparked by my desire to find, and then verify, my paternal Great Grandmother’s, Lizzie’s, maiden name. Until I did that research the only way that I ever heard Lizzie’s husband, my Great Grandfather, referenced was as Washington or Wash King. As my research continued, I was surprised and delighted to find records that not only showed that my Great Grandfather served in the Union army during the Civil War, but that there was also a Civil War Pension File in George and Lizzie’s name that was brimming with information about the couple’s lives. Those initial discovery gave rise to the blog post ‘Yes, This Is Their Civil War Pension File: Showing That Washington Was George W., And That Amanda Elizabeth Was His Wife, Lizzie‘, where I spelled out some of the facts in the pension file that made it crystal clear that soldier and wife that were the subject of those claims were the same people that our family knows to be the parents of my Grandfather, Alfred G. King, and the paternal Grandparents of my Father, George W. King.

The process of obtaining and processing a Civil War Pension File can be overwhelming, but the effort is so worth it for the tremendous amount in family history that the can flow from that research. As my work in pursuing the processing of George and Lizzie’s pension file continues, I’ll continue to link blog posts and other resources here that describe my findings and ongoing development of new research questions.

  • Civil War Pension File Documents – All of the images in George and Lizzie’s Civil War Pension File can be viewed here. The images are divided into the 71 documents that make up the couple’s file. Please note that as processing of this file continues the documents will be reorganized into a closer to chronological order.
  • Civil War Pension File Transcriptions – I’m currently uploading a PDF that will eventually include a transcript, citation and notes for every document in George and Lizzie’s Civil War Pension File to this page. Please keep in mind that there are more than 100 pages in the pension file, so processing the dozens of resulting documents is time-consuming work that will probably not be completed with images, citations and transcription/extract links until the latter half of 2024.
