Family Directory
I have such strong memories of my Mother’s address books. The images used for this Family Directory page were taken from Mom’s last one. Over the years Mom’s books evolved in style, including a metal version with a pop-up cover that I so wish that I kept when Mom started to fill in her next book. No matter how they were designed, each of the books had one thing in common. They were all full of Mom’s penciled notes about the lives of her family and friends. Cross-outs and additions crammed in the margins told the story of our moves, our additions and our losses.
In many ways ‘Address Diaries’ is a more fitting name for those old books. It’s sad that the tradition of physical address books may have been replaced by cell phone apps because those virtual tools may mean a loss of not only family artifacts, but the loss of the family history stories that many of those diaries may have contained.
